179: Personal Sustainability: Reference Books

I believe these books would help many people dress better

Color Me Beautiful, Carole Jackson, ISBN 0-343-33294-6

On page 38 the author states: The seasonal color theory was inspired by the studies of artist and colorist Johannes Itten of the famous Bauhaus school in Germany …He noted that a student’s personal colors were consistently those complementary to his skin tone, hair, and eyes, in both tone and intensity. …Itten concluded that our personal palette, the one to which we are drawn naturally, consists of the very colors that look best on us. … In adapting Itten’s theory to fashion we have developed the four seasonal palettes a guides for clothing, makeup, and wardrobe planning.

Carole Jackson’s second book is the better written. It presents the same information in Color Me Beautiful, this time focused on men.

Always in Style with Color Me Beautiful, Doris Pooser,  ISBN 0-87491-785-9 Ms. Pooser expands thefour seasonal palettes into twelve, which she calls color flow. She says each of the four color palettes has three characteristics. Each of the four seasonal palettes shares one of its characteristics with one of the other three color palettes.   For example, you, Max, are probably a winter.  Although I’m not a color analysist, I suspect your dominate characteristic is dark,  meaning that the colors in the winter palette that are most like the colors in the fall palette would look best on you. All else in Ms. Pooser’s book is a repeat of the information in Color Me Beautiful.
I designed the color diagram to make the ideas in Pooser’s book clearer to my students.  I ALWAYS start a new student with color analysis. This diagram is printed on page 16 in the book I wrote, Sewing Techniques from the Fashion Industry.  My color characteristic is blue, so my second-best season would be summer. My husband is a light red-head, putting him into the spring palette. He is golden so his second-best season is autumn. The names of almost all colors in the spring palette are also the names of fruits and vegatibles. e.g. apple, pumpkin, grape, orange, etc.
This book let’s the beauty of your individuality shine through.
The Triumph of Individual Style, Carla Mason Mathis and Helen Villa Connor, 0-9632223-0-9
I love this book because it presents a long list of body types, shown with renown artists’ rendering, NONE of which are considered to be wrong. The book states that the industry designs for golden mean proportioned body. It shows how to make adjustments for various body types, to either emphasis, or conceal various types of female body parts.
My visit to the TexWorld show in New York City this year (July 2023) was well worth the effort. Their emphasis was on sustainability in the industry.
I believe that for the fashion industry to achieve any measure of sustainability, the industry must also consider advocating personal color palettes. I look at fashion ads. I can’t believe the disconnect between models’ coloring and the coloring of the clothing they often  shown wearing.
Sales would surely increase if models were dressed in clothing that matched their personal palettes. this would also educate the consumer in how to dress better. Having my family color analyzed years ago has saved us an unbelievable amount of money and closet space.
