Designing an Outfit to wear to the Award Ceremony

My son and I won a national award for our local TV show, https://phillycam.org/project/creating-fashion, televised here in Philadelphia. We will receive the award the evening of June 28, at the award ceremony in the BRIC building in Brooklyn at the 2023 ACM Annual Conference.

Here is the clothing I designed and made to wear to the show. I decided to make a business outfit from very dressy fabrics. I want everyone at the show to see that our videos present the information one needs to know to produce high-end, beautiful clothing that fits.

The self-lined jacket, made for the master class, was the inspiration for the ensemble.
The Jacket

I already had a self-lined jacket that I had made for the master class I taught in Baltimore last year. I decided to make a skirt, vest, hat, and handbag to match the  jacket.

The Skirt

To save time I decided to self-line the skirt,  which eliminated hand-hemming; and to make a French waistband, which eliminated the waistband. Setting an invisible zipper eliminated any hand sewing needed, with the exception of  hand-sewing one side of the lining to the zipper.

The vest  allows the vest and skirt to act as a two-piece dress.

The Vest

The vest allows me to remove the jacket if it is hot. The skirt and vest can then function as a two-piece sleeveless dress. Seven small crystal buttons and bound buttonholes down the front of the vest echo the jacket’s five larger crystal buttons and bound buttonholes down the front of the jacket.

The hand-sewn hat was constructed over a hat form, removed from a cocktail hat I had made years ago.
The Hat

Of course one needs a cocktail hat to compliment the outfit. Here it is, decorated with orchid and silver fabric flowers, with a crystal button in the center of the orchid rose.

The Bag

I went shopping for a handbag, but everything looked cheap. So I made a bag with an outside pocket to hold my Iphone.
